The Crucible Essay
In a world where people were killed for being accused of being a witch. The Crucible talks about that; the story talks about a puritan village where people are being accused of being witches, puritans were “radical” catholics who if you sinned you would most likely be punished or pretty much judged harshly. “The Crucible” is a tragedy by Arthur Miller. In “The Crucible” a play by Arthur Miller depicts the powerful against the powerless by how the powerful belittle the powerless, by showing how power impacts people/communities, and how power influences religion.
One way Arthur Miller juxtaposes the powerful against the powerless by depicting the powerful belittling the powerless. In Act 3 it states,”Abigail, in a open threat: Let you beware, Mr. Danforth. Think you to be so mighty that the power of Hell may not turn your wits? Beware of it! There is-Suddenly, from an accusatory attitude, her face turns, looking into the air above-it is truly frightened. Danforth, apprehensively: What is it, child? Abigail, looking about in the air, clasping her arms about her as though cold: I-I know not. A wind, a cold wind, has come. Her eyes fall on Mary Warren. Mary Warren, terrified, pleading: Abby! Mercy Lewis, shivering: Your Honor, I freeze! Proctor: They’re pretending! Hathorne, touching Abigail’s hand: She is cold, Your Honor, touch her! Mercy Lewis, through chattering teeth: Mary, do you send this shadow on me? Mary Warren: Lord, save me! Susanna Walcott: I freeze, I freeze! Abigail, shivering visibly: It is a wind, a wind! Mary Warren: Abby, don’t do that! Danforth, himself engaged and entered by Abigail: Mary Warren, do you witch her? I say to you, do you send your spirit out?” (Miller 33). This quote shows Abigail pretending to perceive a wind or a thing by Mary Warren and people who believe Abigail like Judge Danforth are questioning Mary Warren. This shows the people belittling Mary Warren since Abigail is pretending she is seeing things because of her. Also in Act 3 it states,”Danforth, pounding it into her: You have seen the Devil, you have made compact with Lucifer, have you not? Proctor: God damns liars, Mary! Mary utters something unintelligible, staring at Abigail, who keeps watching the “bird” above. Danforth: I cannot hear you. What do you say? Mary Warren utters again unintelligibly. You will confess yourself or you will hang! He turns her roughly to face him. Do you know who I am? I say you will hang if you do not open with me,” (Miller 36). This shows Danforth yelling at Mary Warren to confess of being a witch or else she will be hung. This shows how Abigail made Danforth believe her so much that he was thinking about hanging Mary Warren for being a witch. This shows that the powerful belittles the powerless.
Another way Arthur Miller juxtaposes the powerful against the powerless is by showing how power impacts people/communities. In Act 2 it states,”Mary Warren, with an indignant edge: She tried to kill me many times, Goody Proctor! Elizabeth: Why I never heard you mention that before. Mary Warren: I never knew anything before. When she come into the court I say to myself, I must not accuse this woman, for she sleep in ditches, and so very old and poor. But then-then she sit there, denying and denying, and I feel a misty coldness climbin’ up my back, and the skin on my skull begin to creep, and I feel a clamp around my neck and I cannot breathe air; and then-entranced-I hear a voice, a screamin’ voice, and it were my voice-and all at once I remember everything she done to me,”(Miller 18). In the quote it talks Sarah Good and how she got accused of being a witch and how Mary Warren thinks Sarah Good tried to kill her. This shows how when people with power accuse people of being witches people start believing they are witches too. Also in Act 3 it states,”Abigail, now staring full front as though hypnotized, and mimicking the exact tone of Mary Warren’s cry: She sees nothin’! Mary Warren, pleading: Abby, you mustn’t! Abigail and all the girls, all transfixed: Abby, you mustn’t! Mary Warren, to all the girls: I’m here, I’m here! Girls: I’m here, I’m here! Danforth, horrified: Mary Warren! Draw Back your spirits out of them,” (Miller 35). This shows Abigail and the girls in the courtroom pretending that Mary Warren is possessing or controlling them in some way and this causes Mary Warren to panic and plead for them to stop. This quote shows how power made the girls join in to pretend they are possessed and how power can make people do anything. This shows how power impacts people/communities.
Another way Arthur Miller juxtaposes the powerful against the powerless is by showing how power influences religion. In Act 2 it states,”Cheever: Why-he draws out a long needle from the poppet-it is a needle! Herrick, Herrick, it is a needle!...Cheever, wide eyed, trembling: The girl, the Williams girl, Abigail Williams, sir. She sat to dinner in Reverend Parris’s house tonight, and without word nor warnin’ she falls to the floor. … And he goes to save her, and, stuck two inches in the flesh of her belly, he draw a needle out. And demandin’ of her how she come to be so stabbed, she-to Proctor now-testify it were your wife’s familiar spirit pushed it in,” (Miller 23). This shows how Cheever found a poppet of Abigail with needle in it which reflects on the fact that she had needle in her belly while eating dinner the day before. This shows how power can influence religion by using things that shamed upon in religious belief. Also in Act 2 it states,”Hale, nods, deliberating. The, with the voice of one administering a secret test: Do you know your Commandments, Elizabeth? Elizabeth, without hesitation, even eagerly: I surely do. There be no mark of blame upon my life, Mr. Hale. I am a covenanted Christian woman Hale: And you, Mister? Proctor, a trifle unsteadily: I-am sure I do, sir. Hale, glances at her open face, then at John, then: Let you repeat them, if you will. Proctor: The Commandments. Hale: Aye. ... Proctor, counts back on his fingers, knowing one is missing. Thou shalt make unto thee any image. Hale: You have said that twice, sir. Proctor, lost: Aye. He is flailing for it. Elizabeth, delicately: Adultery, John,” (Miller 20-21). This shows that Hale is testing John Proctor if he knows his 10 commandment but he forgets one which was adultery which is ironic because he had an affair with Abigail which is adultery. This shows how Hale who has power makes Proctor recite the 10 commandments and this makes Proctor look bad and powerless. This shows how power influences religion.
As a final point, this was how Arthur Miller juxtaposed the powerful against the powerless. The powerful belittling the powerless, power impacting communities, and power influencing religion were all examples of how the powerful was against the powerless. This matters because in all my examples they all had one thing in common they all had something that was influenced, influence in a way is power, if you have the power to influence anything (people, communities, a nation, etc.) you have power, but if you have too much power, it can cause horrendous things to happen. So if you have power use it wisely.

Google is a search engine almost everyone has used to message friends or search up an answer to a question, but researchers have discovered that Google might be negatively affecting our intelligence. Multiple articles and studies by students and people have seen that Google is negatively affects the intelligence of the people who use it.“The Shallows: What the Internet Is doing to Our Brains” by Nicholas Carr, “Google Effect: is technology making us stupid?” by Genevieve Roberts, and “A Study of Students Online research Behavior Infographic” by Moran and Firth are all about how Google is negatively affecting our intelligence. Google is negatively affecting our intelligence on account of it is distracting, it negatively impacts the way we memorize and learn, and it negatively affects our learning habits.
Google is negatively affecting our intelligence by distracting us. According to an article titled “The Shallows: What the Internet Is Doing To Our Brains” by Nicholas Carr states,“If we’re distracted, we understand less, remember less, and learn less.” We are people who are easily distracted by the smallest things and sometimes we are distracted in school or at work. Being distracted like in school makes us not listen to the teacher so we start to understand and learn less. Also in the same article the author states,“That’s the problem with Google and with the Internet in general. When we use our computers and our cell phones all the time, we’re always distracted.” We are in society where the internet is basically our life and sometimes we are distracted by it. But us being distracted by the internet makes us not learn, remember, and understand less. This could be even worse if kids are allowed to use the internet at school and they start to get distracted by it and start to learn and understand less.
Google is negatively affecting our intelligence by it negatively impacting the way we memorize and learn. According to an article titled “Google Effect: is technology making us stupid?” by Genevieve Roberts states,“A recent study (you’ve probably forgotten it by now) suggest 90 percent of is are suffering from digital amnesia. More than 70 percent of people don’t know their children’s phone numbers by heart, and 49 percent have not memorised their partner’s number.-The Kaspersky Lab concludes we don’t commit data to memory because of the “Google Effect”-we’re safe in knowledge that answers are just a click away, and are happy to treat the web like an extension to our own memory.” Some people in this world are to lazy to learn and memorize somethings. So when they need to know something they will just search it up online. Also in the same article the author states,“Dr. Maria Wimber, lecturer at the University of Birmingham’s School of Psychology, believes the internet simply changes the way we handle and store information was.” Some people, like students, might use the internet to find things out for something like a project. But this causes people to not try memorizing information they just remember where to find the information when they need it.
Google is negatively affecting our intelligence by it negatively affecting our learning habits. According to an infographic titled “A Study of Students Online research Behavior” by Moran and Firth the authors state,“With the Internet, everything is just a click away. When we don’t know something, we are primed to turn to the computer to rectify the situation.” People, like students, don’t know everything and rather than reading books with the information they will usually just search it up online. Students might rely on the internet for answers and this will give them bad habits. Also in the same infographic the authors state,“The Internet is filled with incorrect information, which may lead to being misinformed.” The internet is not and should not be trusted 100% because there are still misinformation. As stated before maybe a student might look online for answers but maybe they will find an answer that is incorrect.
In conclusion, Google is negatively affecting our intelligence by people not memorizing and learning, having bad habits, and it being a distraction. Even though there is proof to prove Google is negatively affecting our intelligence there is also proof that it makes us smarter. This is important because we are in a world where everywhere people are using the internet, and they are starting to use it in schools, and if kids and other people’s intelligence is getting negatively affected there is a problem we need to fix.

NFL players have been taking a knee during the national anthem to peacefully protest racial injustices but even though people have the right to protest there are people who thinks it is wrong. There was a dark time in history where people of color were slaves but later on they were freed but not free from the racism. People were segregating the people of color and treated them like trash but overtime this was gone as well. But in today’s world there are still racial injustices happening and people are sick and tired of it and want it gone. Documents A and B talk about it. It is appropriate for NFL players to take a knee during the national anthem since it is a protest of injustice, it is one of our rights, and it is something people agree with.
It is appropriate for the NFL players to take a knee during the national anthem since it is a protest of injustice. According to Document A the author states, “San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick first refused to stand during “The Star-Spangled Banner” on Aug. 26, 2016 to protest racial injustice and police brutality in the United States.” The United States now is a place where you can be what you want to be or learn what you want to learn, but it was not always like that. We treated the people of color like trash and in our current time there are still racial injustice. Colin Kaepernick just wants to protest the racial injustices and by doing this he hopes to reduce what is happening. Also in Document A the author states, “When a person believes the United States of America is not living up to its ideals of freedom, liberty, and justice for all, refusing to stand for the national anthem is appropriate and justified.” When Colin Kaepernick knelt it started a controversial conversation with people saying he was disrespecting the US, but it was not that. Colin was sick and tired of the racial injustices happening in our great nation and wanted to do something that will make a change that would affect generations to come.
It is appropriate for NFL players to take a knee during the national anthem since it is one of our rights. According to Document B the author states, “The First Amendment guarantees freedoms concerning religion, expression, assembly, and the right to petition. It forbids Congress from both promoting one religion over others and also restricting an individual’s religious practices. It guarantees freedom of expression by prohibiting Congress from restricting the press or the rights of individuals to speak freely.” We are in a nation which allows us to speak and express freely and if anyone wanted to protest something like Colin they could do it. Colin is allowed to protest if he wants since it’s one of his rights. According to Document A the author states, “Not standing for the national anthem is a legal form of peaceful protest, which is a first Amendment right. President Obama said Kaepernick was “exercising his constitutional right to make a statement.” Kaepernick is a US citizen and if he or anyone wants to protest they have the right to do so. We are in a nation that is great but it does not mean it has no flaws; we can protest if we want to change something.
It is appropriate for NFL players to take a knee during the national anthem since it something that people agree with. According to Document A the author states, “There’s a lot of racial and social injustices in the world that are going on right now. We just decided to take a knee and pray for the people who have been affected and just pray for the world in general…” People have been affected by racial and social injustices and people like Colin are tired of it and want it gone. People can not just make something not happen they have to start a movement that will make more people want to do something to make it stop. Also in Document A the author states, “The United States is the greatest country in the world. And it is because it provides
opportunities to its citizens that no other country does. The issue is that it doesn’t provide equal opportunity to everybody, and I wanted to support my African-American teammates today who wanted to take a knee. We wanted to draw attention to the fact that there’s things this country that still need to change.” This great country still has flaws that we have to change by doing whatever we can to ensure those flaws are gone so that children live in a world that is perfect. But to ensure that must protest like taking a knee like Colin or walking in the streets with signs; we must fight to make this flaw go away for good.
In conclusion, our country may be flawed but Colin Kaepernick’s silent protest is way to make it great. Colins protest is justified since it is one of our rights, it is a protest against injustice, and it is something the people want to change. This situation is important to us since racial and social injustice is something that affects all of us and it is something we should protest like Colin Kaepernick.
